The company that publishes the Rutland Herald and Barre-Montpelier Times Argus is laying off 14 people.

Publisher R. John Mitchell says his company is trying hard to reduce costs but that it hasn’t been able to offset the loss of advertising revenue, which fell dramatically in December.

The family owned media company, which also publishes the New England Business Journals, employs about 165 people.

Don't know whether you have noticed it or not, but The Burlington Free Press is getting pretty light in the loafers - Not much for advertising there either - Suspect their revenue has dwindled also - Doesn't seem to effect the TV Stations.  Haven't measured it, but appears on items we have recorded we can go through an hour program in less than 45 minutes by fastforwarding through the commercials.

I heard someone say that the Free Press may cut back on days that it puts out a paper. I do find that hard to believe. There is always something going on. Maybe they will reduce it to one section, for some slow news days.
