Seems to me I remember reading or hearing somewhere that BFA used to let the boys off from school to work in sugaring, but for the life of me can't seem to find it or know exactly where I heard it. Happened to run across a comment written on The Burlington Free Press Web site from somebody who went to high school here in Fairfax:

"farmersretired wrote:

as a young man growing up in and around fairfax, working for farmers and going to school, I sugared every spring, the whole bit, from tapping to gathering, with horses of course, they got around better in the woods than tractors. I loved to boil, you were warm and the smell was sweet..I used to get $1.50 extra a day, (stay home from school) and "sugar". There was no way you could miss that, course getting paid helped, because I worked strickly for , "room and board only". If It wasnt for Loretta Horwigan, my teacher, picking me up every morning, making me go to school, I prob. would have missed more school. Thanks to Loretta, I got to graduate. BFA, Fairfax and St. Albans. anyone remember????

Got the following note from one of the guests:

"Hi Henry,
When I was at BFA in the 60's, the boys used to be excused from school for sugaring. At that time, a lot of the community was comprised of farmers, who had sugarbushes. They were also excused for other farming activities, such as planting or harvesting."
