Fletcher – Gordon Fay Gillilan, 66, passed away Thursday evening, March 12, 2009 at the Vermont Respite House in Williston, following a courageous battle with cancer, with family members by his side.

Gordie was born in Burlington on January 14, 1943, the son of the late Roy Jay and Edith (Geddes) Gillilan.  He was married to Mary Jane McGovern on December 2, 1967, who predeceased him.

Gordie graduated from Bellows Free Academy- Fairfax in June of 1961.  He joined the Navy in November and served for 4 ½ years, including 6 months in Vietnam.  Upon returning, he was employed by McGovern – Soule Engineering Sales and Service.  He was later a carpenter with Flanders Lumber Co. and for the last 20 years, had been employed for the town of Fletcher as the Road Foreman.  Gordie enjoyed working part time as a mechanic, but his biggest love was in helping others, going out of his way to put others ahead of himself.  He was a friend to all and always was willing to lend a helping hand and will be dearly missed by all.

Gordon is survived by his sons and their wives;  Patrick of Fletcher, Kenny and Ann Marie of Jeffersonville, and Jonathan and Amy of Fletcher, his grandchildren Amanda, Taylor, Priscilla, Keegan, Kayden, Kaleb, Miranda, McKayla, Jonny and Nathan, his great grandson Jayden, by his brother Rex Gillilan and his wife Eva of Fletcher, his nephew Matthew Gillilan and wife Samantha of Fletcher, his aunts Meredith Gillilan and Marion Spaulding, as well as many cousins, friends and his close friend Cindy Gordon of Essex Jct.

A Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday March 17th at 1pm in the Binghamville United Methodist Church in Binghamville.   Burial will follow in the Binghamville Cemetery.  Following the burial, all are invited back to the church hall to celebrate his life.
For those who wish, memorial contributions may be made to either of the two organizations that were very important to Gordie; The Fletcher/Fairfax Food Shelf, P.O. Box 176, Fairfax, VT  05454 or the newly established Fletcher Historical Society, c/o Pat Root, Treasurer, 3221 Pond Road, Jeffersonville, VT. 05464

Visiting hours will be held on Monday March 16th from 4-8pm in the Minor Funeral Home, Route 7 in Milton.

Gordie was a great man. He always used to wear a hardhat. The first time I saw him without it on, I almost didn't recognize him.
