I suspect I tell you this same thing every year, but find as we get older, we do probably repeat ourselves, however, those younger than us listen again and again.

As many of you know, I was brought up in Fairfield and went to St. Mary's Parochial School in St. Albans for my last three years of high school.  Our high school principal was the pastor of St. Mary's Church and his name was Monsignor Welch, who was a tough taskmaster.  Monsignor was Irish, so the good sisters always played up St. Patrick's Day to the hilt.  We would always have an assembly around 10 a.m. with some St. Patrick's Day appropriate music and activity and ask Monsignor Welch to get up and speak to us.  We laughed wholeheartedly at all of his jokes and applauded him frequently, knowing full well what his last statement would be.

"OK, boys & girls, in honor of St. Patrick's Day, you have the rest of the day off."  Oh how we would cheer and applaud.  Now this was no news to any student that attended St. Mary's High School as it happened every year.  I have no idea if the grade school children got it off or not, as I never hung around to check.

Of course another lesson we might have learned was, always be nice to the Boss, when you get out in the working world, unless, of course, you have nothing to lose.

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY
