Stuart Alney Newton
(April 15, 1917 - April 9, 2009)


St. Albans, VT/Palmetto, FL - Stuart Alney Newton, 91, a longtime area dairy farmer and sugar maker passed away on Thursday, April 9, 2009 in Bradenton, FL from injuries received in an automobile accident. He was born on April 15, 1917, in St. Albans, the son of the late Park H. and Ruth (Stuart) Newton. On December 5, 1941, in St. Albans, Stuart married the former Esther Wheaton who predeceased him on November 20, 2001.

Stuart was a 1935 graduate of Bellows Free Academy and then graduated from the Randolph Agricultural School in 1936. For thirty-four years he had a farm and sugaring operation in Georgia. He retired in 1979 as a salesman for Agway, prior to which, he was a salesman for the Wirthmore Feed Company. He was a member of the Georgia United Methodist Church, Franklin County Senior Citizens, Lucky Lindy 4 H Calf Club in Georgia, a seventy-four year member of the Fletcher Grange 473, a Past Master of Banner Grange 356, and a former member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Stuart loved life, enjoyed singing, selling maple products and visiting with people.

Survivors include his children; the Reverend Samuel Stuart Newton and his wife, Beverly of Littleton, NH, Dickey Lynn Stuckert of Palmetto, Florida and Dorothy Ann Bernat of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, a brother; Robert H. Newton of Georgia, a sister; Rebecca Newton Ballard of Georgia, a son-in-law; Darryll Mossey of Milton, fifteen grandchildren; Bryan Martinson, Karen Sweeney, Joe Bernat III, Heidi Zeiss, Lori Hope, Corey, Byron and Nathan Furman, Megan Latoundji, Rebecca VanDyke, Matthew, Aaron, Joshua and Rachel Newton and Ryan Mossey, Seventeen great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents and wife, Esther, Stuart was predeceased by a daughter, Sue Newton Mossey; grandson; Stephen Martinson and sister Elizabeth Newton Patterson.

A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. at the Georgia United Methodist Church, Ethan Allen Highway, Georgia with the Rev. Henry James, Pastor, and the Rev. Marchetta Townsend, Former Pastor, co-officiating. Following the funeral, Stuart’s cremated body will be placed in the family niche in the Georgia Plains Cemetery with a luncheon to follow in the Church Fellowship Hall. Stuart's family will receive friends on Friday from 5:00-8:00 P.M. at the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. Fletcher Grange 473 will conduct a ritualistic service at the funeral home at 6:00 P.M. during visitation.
