A new kind of counterfeit bill that somehow passes validation tests is making the rounds in Vermont.

The Berlin Police Department and the U.S. Secret Service are investigating the $100 bills, 20 of which have been received by banks and businesses in Berlin, Barre and Montpelier.

Instead of showing a black mark when written on by a currency validation marker, the bills have some sort of chemical coating that allows them to beat the test.

Berlin police say they've located a person traced to 8 of the bills.

No charges have been filed at this point, but police say the investigation is still ongoing.
