Veronica was the aunt of Jim Maloney, former resident of Fairfax, aunt to Rep. Dick Howrigan and sister to Fathers Vincent & Gavin Maloney as well as mother to Sister Janice Ryan.

Veronica Elaine Maloney Ryan Fairfield—Veronica Maloney Ryan, 94, of Fairfield, Vermont, died Tuesday, June 2, 2009, peacefully surrounded by her loving family and friends, at the Ryan Family 1895 Homestead.

She was born June 28, 1914, in Hyde Park, Vermont, the daughter of John and Maria Maloney.

Following graduation from Lamoille Central High School where she was captain of the baseball and basketball teams and editor of the school newspaper, she attended Burlington Business College. She was employed at the Maltex Company in Burlington until she married Leo Ryan October 21, 1935 and moved to Fairfield, VT. As a resident of Fairfield, her employment included Alexander’s Drug Store, Ann’s Children’s Shop, and Director of Trinity College Media Center. She has been an active community member in civic and parish affairs for 65 years. Veronica, a life long activist, served as School Board Director, founded the Fairfield Health Club and Clinic, and served as secretary of the Fairfield Democratic Party. As a member of St. Patrick’s parish she was elected to the Parish Board, appointed to the Deanery of the Burlington Diocese, and served for many years as a Director for the St. Patrick’s Cemetery Association and for the St. Patrick’s Credit Union.

Survivors include three daughters, Maureen Cooper of Las Vegas, Rose Godard of South Burlington and Sister Janice Ryan of Burlington; two sons Dennis and Darlene Symons Ryan of Fairfield, Gavin and Cynthia Ryan of Fairfield, daughter-in-law Darlene Ryan of Ridley Park, Pennsylvania and Patricia Ryan of Sheldon; six grandchildren, Kathleen and David Raleigh of St. Albans, Bridget and Michael Polsky of Ridley Park, PA, Ellen and Michael Gleason of Caroline, RI, Peter Godard and Paul Ketz of Chicago, IL , Janice M. Ryan and Dan Bressette of Washington, DC, Meagan and Jeff Gilmore of St. Albans and Tom and Brenda Ryan of Richford; five great-grandchildren, Brendan Gleason, Emma and Liam Polsky, John David and Grace Ellen Raleigh; three step great-grandchildren, Nicole, Sara & Courtney Thompson. She also leaves many nieces and nephews including Margaret Ryan, Barbara Ryan Branon, Richard Howrigan of Fairfield and Elaine Howrigan Petit and Philip Howrigan of Washington.

Veronica was predeceased by her husband, Leo, in August 18, 1991, son, David Ryan and granddaughter Kellie Veronica Ryan; brothers, Father Vincent Maloney, Father Gavin Maloney, Hugh, Matthew, John; sisters, Ann, Kathleen, Sarah, Elizabeth, Margaret, Helen; and son-in-law, Rene Godard.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 2:00 P. M. in St. Patrick’s Church in Fairfield. Friends may call at the Brady & Levesque Funeral Home, 86 South Main St. St. Albans, from 4 to 8 P. M. Thursday.
