John C. Shedd
(October 10, 1927 - August 18, 2009)


St. Albans/Fairfax - John C. Shedd, 81, a longtime area resident and dairy farmer, passed away early Tuesday, August 18, 2009, at Pillsbury Manor in South Burlington surrounded by his family. Born on October 10, 1927, in Burlington, Vermont, John was the son of the late Walter and Edythe (Connor) Shedd. On February 6, 1947, John married the love of his life, Juanita Cross, who survives him.
John was a 1945 graduate of Bellows Free Academy in Fairfax. He retired from dairy farming in 1984, and then enjoyed playing tennis, maple sugaring and cards. He also was known to be a “Jack of All Trades”. He drove bus for B.F.A. for a number of years and was a former committee member of the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-two years, Juanita of South Burlington; their children, Rod Shedd and his partner, Deb Lesage, of South Burlington, Vicki Popple and her husband, Herb, of Valrico, Florida, Craig Shedd of Mansfield, Pennsylvania, Brent Shedd of Essex Junction, Kim Charboneau and her husband, David, of Swanton, Jeff Shedd and his wife, Cindy, of Shelburne, Brad Shedd and his wife, Renee of Essex Junction, Heather Hoben and her husband, Mark, of St. Albans and Jay Shedd and his wife, Kathy, of Fairfax. John is also survived by twenty-two grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his daughter, Suzanne Shedd Rabidoux in 1994 and his son David Shedd in 2005.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, August 21, 2009, at 11:00 A.M. in the United Church of Fairfax. The Reverend Elizabeth Griffin will officiate. Interment will follow in the Shedd family lot in the Binghamville Cemetery. John’s family will receive friends on Thursday from 4 to 7 P.M. in the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main Street, St. Albans. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Visiting Nurses Association, 1110 Prim Road - Suite 1 Colchester, Vermont 05446. Assisting the Shedd family is Raymond “Rett” Heald of the Heald funeral Home and Cremation Service in St. Albans. Funeral services for John C. Shedd, who passed away Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2009, were held Friday, Aug. 21, 2009, at 11 a.m. in the United Church of Fairfax with the Rev. Elizabeth Griffin officiating.  The organist was Patty Bellows Smith. Hymns selected and sang by the congregation were “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace.”   

    Sons, Rod and Brent Shedd, shared many personal memories of their Dad, with Rod sharing those memories penned by his brothers, Jeff and Jay.  Other remembrances were shared by longtime friend and neighbor, Dale Bellows, and former tennis player, Dinny Hawksworth.

    Delegates represented during the largely attended visitation and funeral service were Fairfax, Fletcher and Westford Town Offices, many area farmers from Franklin, Chittenden and Lamoille Counties, St. Albans Co-operative Creamery, former Fairfax neighbors, former St. Albans East View neighbors, former tennis mates, Pillsbury Manor, IBM, Lake View Cemetery Burlington, Bellows Free Academy-Fairfax former teachers, school board members and bus drivers, Fairfax Fire Department, Minor Country Store, Carl Cain Transport Company, Boyden Valley Winery, The Abbey Group, Office of Pediatrician Dr. Fred Holmes, St. Albans City Schools, Franklin County Home Health Agency, Champlain Valley Visiting Nurses Association and Hospice, U.S. Postal Service, Stowers Funeral Home, Brandon, Fla., John A. Morris Funeral Home, Ipswich, Mass., A. W. Rich Funeral Home, Fairfax, Boucher & Pritchard Funeral Home, Burlington, Ready Funeral Home, Burlington and Spears Funeral Home, Enosburg.

    Interment followed in the Shedd family lot in the Binghamville Cemetery, Fletcher with committal prayers offered by Rev. Griffin.

    Urn Ark bearers were sons, Rod Shedd, Graig Shedd, Brent Shedd, Jeff Shedd and Jay Shedd.

    Assisting the family was the staff of the Heald Funeral Home, 87 South Main St., St. Albans, the Spears Funeral Home and the Ready Funeral Home.
