A CBS News employee is accused of trying to extort $2 million from David Letterman, forcing the late-night host to admit in an extraordinary monologue before millions of viewers that he had sexual relationships with female employees.

Letterman said that "this whole thing has been quite scary." But he mixed in jokes while outlining what had happened to him, seeming to confuse a laughing audience at Thursday's taping about whether the story was true.

The network said the person who was arrested works on the true-crime show "48 Hours" and has been suspended. A person with knowledge of the investigation said the suspect is Robert J. Halderman.

Couldn't happen to a better guy.

When he embarrassed John McCain on his show for about a week solid, I turned him off and have never been back.
You do not treat a war hero, a former POW, and most importantly, a PERSON, like Letterman did.

Mike if you were paying attention, you'd know that JC embarrassed himself by LYING about having to rush back to DC because of the crisis, then shows up interviewing with Katie Couric when he was already scheduled on the other show. If he's such an honorable...ahem...hero, why didn't he just politely cancel and give an honest reason?

Letterman really did hammer him, however when McCain called PERSONALLY and gave his fake trumped-up excuse he really took him at his word so when he saw him next door with Couric, I think Letterman just got pissed for being duped by McCain. They patched things up and McCain finally made the appearance he was supposed to make.

I think the issue was that McCain had made a huge issue of this crisis in DC that he absolutely had to rush back for--like his life and everyone elses depended on it.
So, he wasn't the innocent victim. He may not have deserved to be brow beaten as much as he was, but he did deserve the initial flogging and he knew it.

Mr. McCaiin SHOULD have been honest by saying he wanted to dodge a freak like Letterman.
