St. Albans Bay/Fairfield

Father Joseph T. Sullivan, age 80, died peacefully, Saturday, March 11, 2006, at his home. He was born January 27, 1926 in Springfield, Mass., son of the late Rufus and Anna (Milos) Sullivan. Father Sullivan attended LaSallette Seminaries in Hartford and Bloomfield, Ct., Altamont, N. Y., Milford, Iowa and Ipswich, Mass. He was ordained a Roman Catholic Priest May 1, 1952 at St. Peter Church in Lowell, Mass.,by Bishop Markum. His priestly ministry began at LaSallette Seminary, Hartford, Ct., where he was Prefect of Discipline and teacher (1952—54). He also served as Assistant at St. Francis de Sales, Phoenicia, N. Y., (1954) St. Stanislaus, Nashua, N.H., (1955), Our Lady of Sorrows, Hartford, Ct., (1955—60), LaSallette, Rainham, Essex., England (1960—70).

He was incardinated into the Diocese of Burlington in 1969. His first pastorate in Vermont was at Sts. Donation & Rogation, Randolph (1970—74), pastor at St. Luke, Fairfax (1986—96), Administrator at Ascension, Georgia (1995—96), Administrator of St. Ann, Milton (2000), and as pastor at St Patrick, Fairfield and St. Anthony/St. George, East Fairfield from 2002 to the present. Fr. Sullivan was the former Communications Director of the Diocese of Vermont, from 1974 to 1988. Editor of the Vermont Catholic Tribune from 1975 to 1976, as well as presently director of Evangelization since 1979. Father Sullivan also received the Hope Award from the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his sister Kathleen Lizak of Ludlow, Massachusetts, three nephews and two nieces. He was predeceased by his sister Alice in 1932,his father in 1957 and mother in 1969.

The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 11:00 A. M. in Holy Angels Church, Lake St., St. Albans. Visitation will be held in Holy Angels Church from 9:00 A. M. until the time of the Liturgy. Most Reverend Bishop Salvatore Matano will be the principal celebrant.
