I'm off to H & R Block today - Its that time of year again.  With both of us being over 65 on limited incomes, it is not a big thing and takes about 15 minutes from start to finish.  Maryann just chucks all of our possible tax stuff in a folder all year and I put it in a big brown envelope and just hand it to them.  I used to do them, then Maryann did for a while, then we decided to treat ourselves to having someone else do them rather than do them and wonder if we did it right.

We always end up far short of enough for deductions, which I guess is a good thing and every year get enough back to pay for having the taxes done.

I didn't think seniors had to pay taxes under a certain amount of income?

Would't you prefer to treat yorself to something other than the H & R Block bill with your 'return?'

Don't kid yourself Mirjo - I have to pay income taxes on my IBM Pension because I did not contribute to it and it is considered as income - I have to pay taxes on my TDSP, because when that was taken out of my pay when I was working, I did not pay taxes on it then and you even have to pay taxes on a certain percentage of your Social Security Income - Taxes do not end with retirement -

In regards to treating myself to something else - As we get older, little jobs become big jobs - I used to do my own taxes then Maryann did and each year they throw something new in there where we got to the point we didn't know what we were doing -

Also, everyone wants to give Seniors a choice, which seems like a great thing to those pushing it - But I have to admit I hate every October when I have to make a decision on my prescription plan and health insurance plan and hope I am making the right decision -

OOOOOOOOOOOOPS!!  I guess I am getting off track here, Sorry about that.

You really should consider having them done by the AARP folks.  The folks at the library are retired CPA's, lawyer etc.  One is Wyeth's retired plant manager, and works part time for H&R!  It is a great deal for seniors!  Free!

I think this is likely what I was trying to get at, but didn't say! I know what you're saying, I just don't think you need to give your money to H/R Block (save it for creemees--the season is almost here ya know!!) :-)

And I suggest The Cupboard in Jeff if you haven't been there. I think they're pretty good!!

Actually, one of the best Cree-Mees around is right up at Nan's - If you haven't tried them, give it a try

I left H&R block three yrs ago and have never been happier.  Taxing Matters in St. Albans does my taxes for just over half of what I was paying at H&R block - and my returns seem to get more complicated each year (both due to tax law changes, and life changes).  I estimate what my return will be each year, and Taxing Matters is close or higher than my estimates, so I'm fairly certain H&R block would NOT be getting me enough extra to make up their Larger difference in fees.
That's my opinion.
