Gas prices are going up, but quite a variation around Fairfax.  Highest yesterday were Ross's & Steeple at $2.949, Minor's at $2.929 and the lowest was Nan's at $2.899.

We had someone here on The Fletcher Road that had a bright shiny Red Prius for sale on Rose Finch's lawn.  It had a big sign in front of it that said 50 MPG.  When I went down to the village yesterday, I brought my camera with me and was going to take a closeup photo of it along with the information in the window, but all that was left were tracks in the wet grass, so somebody must have snapped it up.

Somebody analyzed the increase in gas prices as part of our improved economy and said that as the economy improved, gas prices would rise right along with it.  I don't think there will be much future in the Big Old Gas Guzzlers.

Looks like gas prices will be hovering around $3.00 by the end of April, if not sooner.

$2.70 or so in Smyrna, TN (20 minutes south of Nashville)

Brian Farris

I told my wife that a husband is like a fine wine; he gets better with age. The next day, she locked me in the cellar.

I have some observations....

Before President Obama was elected to office, he promised to use federal funds to "stimulate" the creation of green technology.  A target area was fuel economy for cars.  Just before his election the prices for gasoline were int he mid $3.00 to $4.00 per gallon area.

No sooner than Obama was elected the prices for gasoline dropped to the mid $2.00 per gallon area.  Big oil didn't like the message on the wall about increasing fuel economy or other energy saving initiatives so the prices dropped.  The failure of the nations banking system immediately became a larger priority so the funds for energy efficiency initiatives were poured into the banks, GM, AIG, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, etc.

Now that the big stimulus money has been spent and foreign lenders are reluctant to give more to our government the price of gasoline is rising.  The funding is not available to enforce or stimulate efficiency programs.

I am sure the excuse for higher fuel prices is, take your pick:
1) The economy is improving
2) Summer driving demand
3) The switch from winter to summer grade fuel.

The excuses for price increases are so predictable.  Next thing you know there will be a tanker that ruptures at sea or some refinery will be forced to shut down for emergency repairs.  Just wait... prices will be going up again.

My advise, buy stock Exxon Mobile $ 63.56 per share in February & now currently trading at $68.92.  Well capitalized company stock has gained over $5.00 per share in 90 days and pays a dividend.

Just as I had thought... get ready for price increases... hot off the Charles Schwab Web site.

Eleven still missing as oil rig burns
8:08 am ET 04/22/2010 - MarketWatch Databased News

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) - The U.S. Coast Guard said Thursday it's continuing the search for 11 missing workers as a fire continues to burn at the Deepwater Horizon oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico.

Two aircraft were scheduled to search at first light and two Coast Guard cutters were expected to arrive to relieve the Zephyr and Cobia, which remained at the scene over night.

Of the 126 people on the rig, 115 crewmembers have been accounted for.

The drilling rig is owned by Transocean and it's operated for oil major for BP .

A spokeswoman for BP said attempts will be made to put the fire out at the rig.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. The explosion and fire broke out at the rig on Tuesday night, approximately 41 miles offshore Louisiana.

"An investigation into the cause of the incident and assessment of the damage will be ongoing in the days or weeks to come," Transocean said.

Built in 2001, the Deepwater Horizon is capable of operating in harsh environments and water depths up to 8,000 feet, according to Transocean's Web site. It measures 396 feet by 256 feet.

For BP, the explosion comes in the wake of scrutiny surrounding an explosion and fire five years ago at its Texas City, Texas refinery that killed 15 people and injured more than 20.

David            As prophetic as your posting was for future actions by Oil Companies, this latest drilling accident has really caused some major concerns in Florida among the general population, separate from gasoline prices ( currently 2.81 in our area ) . Recently, under assurances from the Industry that modern technology would prevent future disasters , the right to drill for crude oil has been proposed to be moved to under the 10 mile federal limit, making it  ( the rig ) clearly visable from the sand at Clearwater Beach.  In time , however, even though the possibility of a major oil spill exists ( which obviously , could ruin the coast line ) the amount of money spent by proponents of this activity will certainly lead to such a development .
Two days ago the experts predicted little if any crude oil would be spilled from this accident due to a number of factors, but today an announcement of a possible spill of 300,000 gallons per day creating a slick five miles long has been acknowledged by these same experts. In addition, as you are aware, there are still 90 different rigs in the Gulf . We obviously need a separate energy source from the Middle East, but at what cost ???

Open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. ANWR here in Alaska.
There is like a jabillion barrels there.
Also, the only wildlife there are caribou and they LOVE the existing Trans Alaska pipeline, the heat it puts off comforts them.
Serious.

And also let us drill off shore.

Alaska's next thing is natural gas. For years they have been injecting natural gas into the oil wells up on the North Slope to force out the oil.
Now that there is a market for it, we want to get it to market. $$$$
You know who screwed that up....P word.
The previous GOV had it all set to go, oil companies financed the pipeline, pipeline construction, etc etc.
They were closed door meetings and good old boy deals, but it would have happened until SHE opened her mouth and ............ well, I digress.
She screwed us over more than anyone can imagine.............
