ST. ALBANS, Vt. -- Vermont police are looking for a man who broke into an elderly woman's home and climbed on top of her while she was sleeping early Wednesday morning in St. Albans.
Police said the man broke into the Lower Weldon Street home at about 2 a.m. The homeowner, an 82-year-old woman who lived alone, woke up when the man climbed on top of her.
The woman told police she pretended to have a heart attack and the man then demanded drugs and money. The woman told the man any drugs or money would be downstairs and was allowed to lead the man into the lower levels of the home.
Once downstairs, the woman told police she was able to escape and ran to a neighbor's house, where she screamed and banged on the doors to get attention. The neighbors helped the woman and called police.
Grande Isle and Franklin County sheriff's departments responded to the call and a K-9 unit tracked a scent trail from the crime scene to a location on Pearl Street, police said. Vermont State Police also were called to the scene and searched for evidence. The man has not been located.
Police said the man is a large, heavy, older man with some facial hair, possibly a beard. The man told the victim he was 59 years old. The woman told police he was unclean at the time of the attack and was wearing red shorts and a white T-shirt.
