Hi Henry,

I've discovered a chickadee nest on Carroll Hill Rd.
I have seen the bird leave when I am near the mailbox.
I finally got a picture of the chickadee.
The hole is about 4 feet off the ground, about 1 1/2 inch in diameter and about 6-8 inches deep.
There is something in the bottom of the cavity, but I can't get a picture.
This tree is only about 3 steps off the roadway.

JoAnne

I was wondering the same thing... I don't know that chickadees do that... and it seems to be a strange hole for even a woodpecker... anyone got any idea?

I'm pretty sure that these holes were made by pileated woodpeckers who " hammer " out the holes in search for food, as opposed to the smaller woodpeckers ( Downy, Redheaded, etc. ) who lightly strike a tree when looking for insects or larvae.

Hi Henry,

On the chickadee nest cavity. There is pileated woodpecker damage in the area, and chickadees will hollow out some, also. So says my bird book.
