An ugly car crash sent a Franklin County sheriff's deputy to the hospital.

It happened around 1:00 this morning on Route 207 in Swanton.

Police say the deputy was responding to a domestic disturbance call in Highgate when he lost control of his cruiser and crashed into a utility pole.

The sheriff's department isn't releasing the name of the deputy but say he was wearing a seatbelt and his injuries don't appear to be life threatening.

There's no word on how fast the deputy was traveling or if there was anyone else in the cruiser at the time.

I hate to see anyone trying to provide assistance to someone in need getting injured, but hopefully this will serve as a reminder to police officers that their lights, badges, and a driving class or two don't put them above the laws of physics. (they don't have to be above VT traffic laws because VT Law specifically states police are exempt from the traffic laws).
I cringe a little when I see the police flying past our house as they approach the blind intersection on a curve that has been the sight of several accidents in the past two years, including a fatality.
