A Vermont National Guard soldier has died in Afghanistan, the state's Adjutant Gen. Michael Dubie said.

Dubie said Specialist Ryan Grady, 25, of West Burke, Vt., was killed by an improvised explosive device near Bagram.

Grady, who was the son of a guard members and the brother of a soldier currently serving in Afghanistan, had previously been awarded a Purple Heart for an injury he suffered in Iraq.

He is survived by a wife and daughter.

Not sure if Bagram is where a number of our local soldiers are or not, but Father Feltz has mentioned it in his notes.

I understood them to say that there were four other Vermont Soldiers seriously injured in this explosion, but can't find it in print any place.

The printed story on Channel 3 states that 4 other Vermont Guardsmen were injured in the attack:

"Four other Vermont guardsmen were injured in the vehicle struck the roadside bomb. General Dubie told us this afternoon that they are listed in serious to very serious condition. Three of the guardsmen are in Germany at this hour -- the other guardsman is still at Bagram. General Dubie also says that this tragedy should be remembered by all Vermonters on America's birthday."

One of the four Vermont Guardsmen identified:

A Salem, N.H. Selectman is waiting for word on his son, who was critically injured in bombing in Afghanistan.

According to WMUR, Sgt. Arthur Barnes was injured after his vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb near Bagram Air Force Base. Barnes is the son of Salem Selectman Arthur Barnes III.

The Selectman told WMUR his son was serving in the Vermont National Guard. He suffered a fractured spine, jaw and a punctured lung in the accident.

My heart goes out to the family of Grady, and to the families of all of those injured as I pray for the safe return of the rest of our soldiers on a daily basis.
I hope that everyone keeps in mind that the sacrifices being made by our loved ones are done so to try to keep all of us safe.
