I have seen the Sheriff on Shepardson Hollow Road as well as the VST but keep in mind there has been "hot-spots" on that road in the past.  However, to seen the Sheriff twice in one day on that road I would agree this site may have caught someone's Attention or the fact of Re-election is up for grabs!  On another note ... about this re-election .... Does anyone run against Sheriff Norris?  It doesn't seem like there is any competion here!  As the saying goes, nothing like good clean competion to IMPROVE the quality!

Sheriff Norris is unopposed in his Democratic Primary.

Gale Messier and Paul Morits are running in the Republican Primary.

Info coming on all candidates, prior to the Primary, August 24th.

Should Sheriffs have political party affiliation ?
I'm curious how Fairfax feels about this.

I always thought that having a law-enforcement position be an elected one was a relatively bad idea.  I dont think peace officers should be politicians, and I dont like them running as members of a certain party.  To me it seems like a remnant of earlier times.

Does anyone have a good rationale why it is this way?

We've lived on the School Road in Fletcher for years... Have complained about the 4-wheelers many times to Sheriff's Dept and State Police.  They don't want to hear about it... They go by all hours of the night with no lights on!!!

It seems to me that a neighbor would see them leave and return. If we all keep an eye out we would know where they came from. We had to do this with the snow mobiles. I traced it right back from the donut in our driveway to the garage of their house. No problems since. Didn't take a sherrif to solve it either. It has been 2 years and we have not even seen a snow mobile up here.

If Law Enforcement could do something it would help!! I think that their needs to be hard penalties for people that drive ATVs in a dangerous manner(IE..Speeding doing burnouts and wheelies) on our roads.  Of course the fact that there is a no chase policy for officers doesn't help it just makes it worse.  The kids know that if they run they can't be chased so what do you think the first thing they do is? Try and run.

We keep talking about the kids here, who are all underage I will assume and therefore still the responsibility of their parents...

It is apparent that the parents either can't control these kids or don't want to. Since they are clearly bothering others and in violation of a law, maybe the approach should be to the parents and fine them or something. Having to pay money always gets people's attention. If the fine is stiff enough, someone is bound to listen.

As for Sheriffs being elected: it I didn't realize  they were affiliated with political parties even though they are elected officials.

They shouldn't be elected  they should be hired and fired for how effective or ineffective they are at their job. Politics should be kept out of it. Politics is the root of all evil in modern times. Religion in ancient times. Although I think historically, politics & religion were intertwined somewhere.

It seems the Sheriff's Dept is driven by revenue only. It's not profitable to do anything during those 40 hours other than set speed traps. Why bother with scofflaws--there isn't any money there.

Molly, if they are deliberately doing things right in front of your house in apparent attempts to annoy you specifically, then I would think it is something that law-enforcement can get involved in.  I dont know if that would fall under harrassment, stalking, or simply distrurbing the peace, but I would say give either the sherrif or state police a call.

So glad this has been resolved!  Wonderful news Mollyd79!  I agree with Josh, there are many respectful 4 wheelers and snowmobilers out there.
