A federal arbitrator has ruled that the City of St. Albans violated its union contract nearly a year ago when it laid-off three full-time firefighters and replaced them with a call force from St. Albans Town.

In his Aug. 26 decision, Lawrence E. Katz, an arbitrator based in Newton, Mass., said the city must reinstate Jordan Hayes, Randy Dame and Rocky Berry with full seniority and give them retroactive pay and benefits. They lost their jobs in September 2009.

Now this is one very good example of the importance of a Union.

Although, IBM has been success in laying off worker and then posting HUGE signs at their entrance HIRING NOW!  Channel 3 news is always a great sucker for giving IBM good public relations.  Leaving one who has been displaced after 20-some years of service  left to wonder is this right?

This is IBM Country here in Vermont.  Once upon a time IBM worked with the employee to help "bridge" them over into retirement.  That is not the case anymore, things have changed.

Sounds like St. Albans is just exercising what IBM has been practicing for years nows and getting away with it because there is no UNION.  It is about time someone stands up to the big business.  It doesn't seem like the law makers are ever there when you need them at a time like this - remember in November!  Bernie should be all over this and IBM but he is not:(

You guys are lucky to have a Union because you would be on your own - otherwise.
