News from the Town Librarian:2012 was year of growth at the library! I’d like to share some statistics about the library in the next few monthly newsletters. This information and more will be included in the 2012 Town Report as well.
Weekly visits were up 17% compared to 2011, and 76% compared to 2010.
The number of programs we offered, for all ages, rose by 30%, to a total of 142 programs, and program attendance rose by 59%.
The number of library materials checked out increased by 3.4% (non-digital, i.e. actual physical items housed in the library), which is significant in this digital age.
Use of both digital (downloaded) eBooks and audio books was up by 22%.
The new library website received over 2400 visits.

No longer just static repositories of books and reference materials, libraries are increasingly at the heart of our communities, providing a broad range of services and activities. Calendar for Late January/February 2013:Tuesday, January 29th, 6:30-7:30 pm: People Helping People GlobalHave you heard of micro-lending before? Did you know that we have an international micro-lending organization right here in Fairfax? Please join us at the library to learn more about the non-profit organization, People Helping People Global. PHPG has been helping people living on less than $2 a day start businesses and raise themselves out of extreme povery since 2009. The co-founders, Alex Tuck and Isabel Gamm, will be at the Fairfax Library to give a talk and head a discussion about the organization and its work. Thursday, January 31, 6:30-7:30 pm: Intro to Digital ResourcesDid you receive a new tablet or eReader this Christmas? Did you know that you can access a wide range of digital services on your device with just your library card? Resources include: Listen Up! Vermont audio and eBooks, One Click Digital audio books, Universal Class, and more! We'll be giving a free tutorial here at the library.
Friday, February 1 (3-6 pm) and Saturday, February 2 (10 am-12 pm): Stuffed Animal SleepoverYoung ones’ favorite stuffed animals spend the night at the library. What happens when stuffed animals take over the library? On Friday, from 3 to 6 pm, children can drop off their stuffed animal with the librarians in the children’s section. In the morning, children can come pick their animals up and watch a slideshow of the stuffed animals’ night at the library, enjoy a snack, and receive a certificate, from 10 to 12 pm. Free, for children of all ages.
Monday, February 4, 2:15-4:00 pm: Chess Club: Friendship Match The Chess Club will be having a special friendly match at Georgia Elementary School. Children who participate will need guardians to sign a permission slip and have it returned to the library by Jan. 29th. Boards and chess pieces are provided, though you can certainly bring your own. Tuesday, February 5, 6-8 pm: Needle Felted HeartsThere is nothing quite like a homemade Valentine’s craft! Join Annette Hansen of Make Life Cozy at the library to learn how to make a needle felted heart. No experience necessary. $10 per person (cash or check). Preregister at the library. Ages 8+ (14 and under with guardian).

Thursday, February 7, 6:30- 8 pm: Memorable Memoirs VHC Reading Group Discussion Join us in our first reading group discussion for the VT Humanities Council book series "Memorable Memoirs." We will be discussing Henry Adams's 19th Century work The Education of Henry Adams. John R. Turner will be leading our discussion. All are welcome to attend. Sign out your copy of the book at the library today!
Thursday, February 7, 6:30-7:30 pm: PJ Story Time with Success by Six Toddlers bundle up in their favorite pajamas for a PJ story time and craft activity at the library. Ages 0-6. Free.

Thursday, February 14, 3-4:15 pm: Read to a Dog Kids can read a book of their choice to a fuzzy, friendly dog. To sign-up for a time slot, call (849-2420) or stop by the library.
Saturday, February 16, 8:30 am-12:15 pm: Chess TournamentThe library is delighted to host a youth chess tournament. *Pre-registration greatly appreciated.* There are three divisions of play (K-2nd grade, 3rd-5th grade, and 6th-8th grade). Registration is from 8:30 to 9 am. The tournament starts at 9 and ends at 12 pm. Trophies and medals will be awarded from 12-12:15 pm. This tournament is open to homeschoolers and students from Fairfax, Georgia, and Fletcher Schools. Thursday, February 21, 6-7:30 pm: Genealogy Workshop Research your roots! Where were your great-great-grandparents? How did your ancestors end up in America? Genealogy allows us to answer those questions and more. Join experienced genealogist Ed McGuire, President of the Vermont Genealogy Library and VT French-Canadian Genealogy Society, at the library to learn about how to start researching your ancestry.
